June is usually a month filled with events we look forward to: longer days, gardens in bloom and in most years, we get to see the Southern Resident orcas spending time in the Salish Sea. It’s also the time of year that we celebrate Orca Action Month!
To say this is an unusual year would be a huge understatement. COVID-19 has most of us navigating daily life in novel ways. This means that Orca Action Month will look a little different this year but will be better than ever.
Why Orca Action Month? As the Southern Residents return to the Salish Sea, the Georgia Strait Alliance team wants to celebrate them, a population that means so much to the region. It’s also a chance to champion actions that help protect the endangered population and their habitat.
On June 1st we’re launching a series of activities and events that you can participate in from the comfort of your home. You’ll learn, you’ll get to share and you’ll have fun too!
Like Bingo? Join us for a month-long game of bingo, featuring our list of Everyday Actions for Endangered Orcas. Complete as many of the challenges as possible and you might win one of the amazing prizes we have. One of the best parts of this bingo game is that you can play from your safe spaces and whenever you have the time. Download the bingo card here and click the squares for more information on the activities. Instructions for how to play and enter the prize draw are located at the bottom of the bingo card.
Not a Bingo fan? Not a problem. We will also be bringing our community together, virtually, for two special events:
- On June 6th join GSA’s Michelle Young, Kirsten Mathison and Tessa Danelesko for a webinar on the 2020 federal protection measures for Southern Resident orcas. We will be talking about the endangered population, the threats they face and the new measures. We will also host a question and answer period to make sure you have all the information you need before you head out on the water.
- On June 26th we will host a virtual Community Coffee Break all about orcas. It will be an opportunity to connect with GSA supporters from around the region, and beyond, to celebrate Orca Action Month and chat about issues and solutions related to protecting Southern Resident orcas.
We are looking forward to coming together and connecting with you in new ways. Join GSA’s Orca Action Team , as it’s the best way to get the latest Orca Action Month announcements and year-round updates on Southern Resident orcas, including a quarterly newsletter. Make sure to follow Georgia Strait Alliance on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter @GeorgiaStraitBC for Orca Action Month videos, articles and resources.
We are also excited to announce a special offer – all online donations this month automatically sign you up to the Orca Action Team, so donate for orcas today!
Here’s to staying safe, feeling well and celebrating Southern Resident orcas!
