Georgia Strait Alliance awards False Creek Harbour Authority top environmental rating

Today, the Georgia Strait Alliance (GSA) presented False Creek Harbour Authority with the highest possible Clean Marine BC eco-rating certification at the 17th annual Harbour Authority Association of BC Conference at River Rock Resort.  This is the first time the coveted 5-anchor rating has been awarded. Clean Marine BC is a voluntary environmental best practices program for marinas, yacht clubs and boat yards.

“Being a commercial fishing harbour on the BC Coast has given us a strong tie to our water ways and the environment,” says Mike Loy, Harbour Master at False Creek Harbour Authority. “We are honoured to be recognized with a 5-anchor rating and will stay the course with our continued commitment to the Clean Marine BC Program and the environment.

“We are absolutely thrilled to recognize False Creek as a marina leading the way in environmental best practices,” says GSA’s Executive Director Christianne Wilhelmson. “Together with our green boating education, GSA’s Clean Marine BC eco-rated marinas help prevent and mitigate pollution from recreational boating.”

GSA has distributed more than 90,000 copies of its Guide to Green Boating, with thousands more copies downloaded from its website. To date nine marinas have achieved Clean Marine BC eco-certification, while another 13 have enrolled with the hope of achieving eco-certification in the future.

The program has been recognized twice by the Canadian Safe Boating Council for playing an important role in keeping coastal waters healthy by working with boaters to show them simple and inexpensive measures to prevent harm to the environment.
