Local ocean film festival celebrates 5th year

May 21, 2014

VANCOUVER – Returning for its fifth season, the Vancouver Festival of Ocean Films (VFOF) will open its doors to the SFU Goldcorp Theatre on June 3, 4 and 5. Proudly sponsored in part by Georgia Strait Alliance(GSA), the VFOF attracts local and international filmmakers and presenters to this multimedia event and film competition. This year’s films focus on adventure, surf and the environment. Each evening’s screenings will be introduced by world renowned speakers including Canadian adventurers Kevin Vallely and Frank Wolf.

The VFOF’s goal is to inspire and stimulate audiences to explore, and get excited about their relationship with the ocean. Net profits from the festival will be donated to GSA to assist in their mission to protect and restore the marine environment and promote the sustainability of the Georgia Strait, its adjoining waters and communities.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the VFOF again this year”, says, Christianne Wilhelmson, GSA’s Executive Director. “Their efforts to raise awareness about the importance of the oceans in our lives align completely with our work at GSA. The films screened this year are amazing, and our hope is that they will inspire people to become more engaged in protecting our waters and to become stewards of the Strait. We’re grateful to MEC for their title support of this year’s festival, and to presenting sponsors One Ocean Expeditions and Michael Green Architecture, along with supporting sponsors Deep Cove Canoe and Kayak, Denman Island Chocolate, and media sponsor, the Georgia Straight newspaper.”

For the fifth consecutive year, filmmakers are competing for a grand prize expedition cruise for two to the Antarctic Peninsula, donated by One Ocean Expeditions.

Peter Alfred, VFOF’s founder, says, “We’ve got three days of incredible films from around the world along with some amazing speakers. I know that anyone who comes to a screening will leave truly inspired, carrying with them a new mindset about the importance of our planet’s oceans in our lives – the driving force behind both the VFOF and GSA.”

The VFOF is dedicated to protecting our environment for the next generations by raising interest and awareness of the ocean not only as a place for positive recreation, but also as a place of sustainable and responsible commerce, and a wilderness to be respected. The VFOF aims to inspire and stimulate people to explore their relationship with the ocean by bringing together local and international filmmakers and presenters in a multimedia event and film competition.
