The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, now twice approved by the federal government, prioritizes fossil fuel products that we know are destabilizing our climate. We see this in our communities as the frequency and intensity of floods, fires and droughts are increasing.
We are in a climate emergency.
Municipalities across the province have passed motions opposing the proposal and expressing deep concerns about the National Energy Board review and emergency response plans. Over 100 First Nations and tribes from across North America have signed a declaration banning tar sands pipelines from their territories under indigenous law. Business leaders like the former CEOs of BC Hydro and ICBC are speaking out in opposition. The courts have already quashed the federal government’s approval of the expansion, a win for First Nations and for the southern resident orca. Now that the project has been approved once again, after a hasty round of add-on consultations, dozens of legal challenges are being re-filed against the project.
In short, this project faces a powerful and diverse opposition who are saying ‘no’ to Trans Mountain, and ‘yes’ to a clean energy future of liveable cities, stable jobs and healthy communities.
We can win this if we all pull together and keep the pressure on.
What can you do?
- Pull Together to support First Nations’ legal challenges against Trans Mountain. The federal court decision is not going to be the last court case on this controversial project, and First Nations communities are at the front line of the legal fight. Fundraise online, organize events in your community, and help fill the legal war chest!
- Sign up to join our campaign teams! GSA’s Community Organizer will get you to participate in this, and other campaigns to defend our coastal waters!
- Support other legal challenges such as this one brought by youth. Show up to rallies for Fridays for Future and bring signs that show you don’t support this project as part of strong climate action.
- Donate to Georgia Strait Alliance, a strong partner for coastal communities. We’re dedicated to protecting our coast from oil spills and other negative impacts from fossil fuel development. We are an environmental voice that is rooted in B.C.’s coastal communities, and can advocate, influence and provide opportunities for citizens to take coordinated and meaningful action.
