On January 30th, 2018, Georgia Strait Alliance along with our partners at Ecojustice, David Suzuki Foundation, Raincoast Conservation Foundation, Natural Resources Defense Council and World Wildlife Fund sent the Ministers of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada a petition asking that they recommend Cabinet implement an Emergency Order under the Species at Risk Act to take actions to immediately address the threats facing the endangered Southern Resident killer whales.
We asked the Ministers to respond by March 1, 2018. The deadline has come and gone with no commitment to action, however, we’ve been in communication with the Departments and Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Dominic LeBlanc. Though they are not prepared to make a decision about a recommendation at this time, they are considering measures to address the threats to the whales. We will be learning more about the measures the government is considering in the coming weeks, however, we stand firm in our recommendation of an Emergency Order being the best tool for the government to use to protect the Southern Residents immediately.
Help us keep up the pressure—the Southern Residents need action now!
Sign the petition below to send a message to Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Dominic LeBlanc and Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna and join us in asking them to recommend an Emergency Order under the Species At Risk Act to protect the endangered Southern Residents. Your message will be forwarded to your local Minister of Parliament and Prime Minister Trudeau.
You can simply sign the petition letter we have written or you can add your own comments to personalize your letter, detailing why protecting the Southern Residents is important to you and the Pacific Coast!
