Digital Communications and Outreach Assistant (funding dependent)

The position will start June 1st, 2020 (or soon after) until February 28, 2021, if funding is obtained
$14.60-$15.50/hr dependent on rate of funding received
(30 hours/week)

The successful applicant will work from their home on the territory of the Lkwungen (Esquimalt and Songhees) and WSÁNEĆ peoples in the Victoria, BC region, and report to the Public Engagement Coordinator

Are you a storyteller with a passion for marine conservation? Help us tell the stories of the Salish Sea and inspire communities to take action to protect our marine environment! 

Use your creativity everyday and develop skills producing captivating videos, crafting engaging social media and blog posts, and hosting fun and educational events. Working remotely from the Victoria B.C. area, you will have the opportunity to work closely with our incredible team who have decades of experience speaking up for our environment. Established in 1990, the mission of Georgia Strait Alliance (GSA) is to promote the sustainability of the Strait of Georgia and its adjoining waters and communities.  GSA is committed to a future for the entire Salish Sea region that includes clean water and air, healthy wild salmon runs, rich marine life and natural areas, and sustainable communities.  We currently have over 16,000 members and supporters who work collectively to address root causes of threats to the Strait and find solutions that protect it.

What you’ll be doing: 

  • Develop captivating communications materials for community outreach and engagement.
  • Help GSA develop relationships with new and diverse audiences, and forge creative and partnerships
  • Conduct research into the biological and cultural diversity of the Salish Sea and create engaging and creative resources to educate and inform the community about this unique bioregion
  • Help implement GSA’s social media strategy and create new content to increase our engagement and online community
  • Help create digital content including video and audio products.
  • Write regular blog posts that address current events or can be utilized as evergreen content
  • Help us plan how best to connect with people of all ages at outreach events and activities, including World Ocean’s Day (June 8), Orca Month (June), Water’s Edge Day (September), and the Festival of Ocean Films (February) by creating materials, supporting events and developing online tools for community action throughout their time with us
  • Working with our volunteer coordinator, help recruit, train and track volunteers to help with public and digital engagement 

Skills and Experience:

  • You’re comfortable using Google Drive, Slack, and other online collaboration tools (or ready to learn)
  • You love being on social media and get a kick out of discovering new platforms 
  • You’re a great writer – for all types of mediums – and a passionate public speaker
  • You love being in front of or behind a camera and like making videos and taking pictures
  • You love the Strait of Georgia and enjoy spending time along its shores
  • You are a master at staying organized and staying on time
  • You love working as part of a team, but are also very comfortable working alone.
  • You’ve spent time researching topics for reports and essays, and know how to turn all the you’ve learned into a readable and accessible content

This position is funded by Canada Summer Jobs, therefore applicants must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
